Spring Awakening at EWS Sonnenfeld Bruck an der Leitha

15.03.2023: Last autumn's winter seeds are already showing up on the sunny field. For the farmers, it is now time to plan and organise the cultivation of the fields for this year's harvest.

In the case of the EWS Sonnenfeld Bruck an der Leitha agri-PV pilot plant, this is somewhat more complex; after all, the field also has PV components installed on 2.5m high module tables for solar power production. In order to find out how well different plant cultures thrive on the cultivation lines between the sun catchers, the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences also accompanies the project scientifically. In the Boku research department at the EWS Sonnenfeld Bruck an der Leitha, data for meaningful results will be collected and evaluated over the next 3 years.

Photovoltaics and photosynthesis - what grows how well?

According to the management plan, grain millet, soy, maize, potatoes, sunflowers, cereals and poppies will be cultivated in spring 2023.

"We are already very curious to see how the plants typical for our region will thrive at the sun field. What is important for us farmers is how the sowing, care and harvesting with the various agricultural implements work in practice. In autumn 2022, we have already had positive experiences and we assume that we will do well with the control options of the module tables during cultivation and ultimately also during harvesting," says Matthias Pober from Energiepark Bruck.

From the recorded practical reports of the farmers and the results of the scientific monitoring of the Boku, we will see what works well in the dual use of the Sonnenfeld and what does not. All the findings will flow directly into the ongoing operation of the Agri-PV system and help with the successive optimisation of processes and procedures.

All those involved in the project are very happy and committed and agree: it is a great, innovative and timely pilot project with a lot of potential!

An area of at least 5 hectares in size should not be a problem. Will it be suitable for agricultural photovoltaics?
I hope so and will do the "area check"!
