Launch of the "EWS Sonnenfeld - Bruck/Leitha" Agri-PV research and demonstration plant project

07.10.2021: Energiepark Bruck and EWS sign cooperation agreement for the implementation of the largest Agri-PV pilot plant in Austria. The EWS Sonnenfeld - Bruck an der Leitha was selected by the expert jury of the Climate and Energy Fund as a particularly innovative "model and flagship project for photovoltaics". With Boku Vienna, a competent research partner is on board.

"We are very pleased that our project has received the recognition and appreciation of the expert jury of the Climate and Energy Fund. We have been working on the product development for two years and can now finally implement it," says Joachim Payr from the EWS.

Boku as research partner

The pilot plant is intended for research and demonstration purposes for the market introduction of Agri-PV plants on good arable land and grassland. In the coming years, research will be conducted on which plant cultures and forms of cultivation are best suited for simultaneous PV production. Even though the technical PV components have already been tested for many years, there are still some open questions regarding the combination with agricultural use. Among other things, a wide variety of technical PV system designs will also be applied.

Dr. Alexander Bauer from the Institute of Agricultural Engineering at the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna, will be responsible for the scientific management of the project in cooperation with the Institute of Crop Production: "Within the framework of the project, agricultural engineering and crop production issues relating to Agri-PV can be addressed. Concepts for sustainable dual use of agricultural land can thus be developed."

Dual use for agriculture & energy production

Michael Hannesschläger, CEO of Energiepark Bruck an der Leitha: "Agriculture and energy production are traditionally closely linked. The Agri-PV use at the trial field in Bruck is intended to show that energy from the sun, agriculture and ecology do not represent a contradiction. As a regional energy producer with core agricultural owners, this project brings together many of our areas of life and work."

This approach is also appreciated by Managing Director DI Ingmar Höbarth of the Climate and Energy Fund: "The Agri-PV plant EWS Sonnenfeld - Bruck an der Leitha hits the nerve of the time and, moreover, takes into account several important aspects at the same time, such as land consumption and biodiversity."

An area of at least 5 hectares in size should not be a problem. Will it be suitable for agricultural photovoltaics?
I hope so and will do the "area check"!
